no this isn’t related to last nights monster burger, Its a code p0456 on an 03' Camry driven/maintained by my brother-in-law. Responding to this code with be part of this weekend’s activities. This could be caused by anything from a leaking solenoid valve to a bad fuel cap. Our first thought was to smoke the bastard out. My B-I-L found this to use, but this smoke machine is probably more than what the cars worth.

I would start by replacing the gas cap anyways with a dealer replacement only. They’re pretty cheap and the seals wear out after over a decade in a car.

Start with visually inspecting all of the evap lines for tiny cracks, as well as the gas cap seal. If you have a scan tool capable of actuating components make sure the purge valve and canister shut off valve operate. You can test them with a hand vacuum pump to make sure they don’t leak. You can also test most individual components that way, but you need access to every opening so you can isolate it. Beyond that, take it to a shop for smoking. Evap diagnosis can be a real PITA, especially if you don’t have a smoke machine.

Probably a leaking filler neck thats rusting away which is throwing the leak code. Very common on that model.

I’ve seen plenty of cracked evap canister tops on Toyota’s of that vintage either where the lines go in, or where the top is welded/glued to the canister body.

I recently had an intermittent P0442 (small evap leak) on my ‘03 S40. Seems to have been the gas cap, as the gasket was massively cracked, and hasn’t reoccurred since I replaced it.
